Asked about the company’s acquisition pace on a conference call Thursday discussing the ITA deal, Google’s Schmidt said the company is strategically seeking companies that help solve a specific problem, not just looking to buy.

“It’s not doing acquisitions for acquisitions’ sake,” Schmidt said. “It’s to solve problems. In Admob’s case - you know the merger is now complete - it solves new and interesting problems for mobile advertisers. We do it in the context of a problem being solved. I’m sure we will continue to do them. The majority of acquisitions we do are quite small and do not get the kind of attention that ITA does…in the media.”
