グーグル社はインドでの音楽サーヴィスを、その開始から3年未満で終了させた。
合衆国におけるテクノロジの巨人である同社は、2011年から進めている構造改革のため、他のプロダクト及びサーヴィスとの調整を目的に廃止を決めた。
今年に入って以来、グーグルはお気に入りウェブサイトをあとで読むための「リーダー」など、いくつかのサーヴィスを終了させた。ほかには、グーグル・アース及びマップス向けの３次元設計「ビルディング・メーカー」や、ブラックベリイ向け音声アプリを終了させている。
「これはグーグルにとって、プロダクトのポートフォリオ充実のため進行中の取り組みの一環です」と、グーグルのインド部門のスポークスウーマンが声明で述べている。「音楽のことについては、いまはユーザーが音楽を合法で聴ける方法が検索で（よそのウェブサイトで）見つけられるようになっています」
2010年、グーグルはgoogle.co.in/musicのページでこのサーヴィスを開始し、インドのインターネット・ユーザーに合法な音楽をオンラインで検索しダウンロードできることを目指した。当時、デジタル媒体の違法利用に対処するねらいがあった。同社はこれにあたり、インド国内の音楽企業「サレガマ・インディア」、インド国内のポータルサイトで「ネットワーク18メディア＆インヴェストメント」傘下の「in.com」、ニューヨークのメディア企業「サーヴン」と提携し、サーヴィスや楽曲一覧化に取り組んだ。
グーグルはin.comに対し、このサーヴィスを6月7日付で終了することをすでに通知していたことを、in.comの幹部で当提携の責任者である人物が匿名で明かした。（続きを読む）

Google Inc. has shut down its music service in India less than three years after launching it.

The development comes as the U.S. tech giant has been consolidating its product and services, an initiative it began in 2011.

So far this year, Google has also shut down services such as the Reader that allowed people to keep tabs on their favorite websites; the Building Maker that was used for making three-dimensional building models for Google Earth and maps; and the voice app for Blackberry, among others.

“This is part of an ongoing effort across Google to bring greater focus to our portfolio of products,” a spokeswoman for the Indian unit of Google said in a statement. “In the case of music, we felt that there are many legal music options for users now featured in search (from other websites).”

In 2010, Google launched the service google.co.in/music to help Indian Internet users search and download legal online music, in a move that was aimed at combating digital piracy. It had partnered with local music company, Saregama India Ltd.; in.com, an India-based portal owned by Network 18 Media & Investments Ltd.; and also New York-based media company Saavn LLC for the service and cataloguing songs.

Google had informed in.com about its move to shut down the service from June 7, an executive at in.com, who is in charge of the partnership, said on condition of anonymity.
