Mac関連のうわさサイトThink Secretは12月20日、米Appleとの訴訟で和解に至ったことを発表した。また同時に、同サイトの閉鎖も明らかにした。和解の条件など詳細は明らかにされていない。

2005年1月にアップルが提訴していた件

米メディアの報道（New York Times）によると，Appleは製品情報を正式発表の2週間前に無断掲載されたとして，2005年1月にThink Secretを提訴していた。

ほかの情報サイトへの影響は決定的

今回のニュースは、「9to5Mac」「Mac Rumors」「AppleInsider」など、Appleに関するうわさを提供する主要なサイトにとって衝撃となるのは間違いない。

Think Secret運営者はハーヴァード大学生22歳、始めたのは13歳

気になるのはThink Secret運営者Nick Ciarelli氏の今後だ。同氏はAppleとの訴訟がスタートした2005年1月に、自身が米ハーバード大学在学の19歳の学生であることを自ら編集人を務めるHarvard Crimson紙で明らかにした。同氏によれば、Think Secretをスタートしたのは13歳の中学生のとき。その後もニューヨーク州内の学校に通いながらサイトを運営、ハーバード大に入学し現在に至るまで 10年近くサイトの運営を続けてきたことになる。

The Wall Street Journal has called Think Secret "one of the most influential Web sites" about Apple.

Mr. Ciarelli declined to say whether he had received a cash payment from Apple as part of their agreement, though he said he was "very satisfied" with the terms of the settlement. An Apple spokesman, Steve Dowling, also declined to comment on the settlement terms. "We are pleased to reach this amicable settlement and happy to have this behind us," Mr. Dowling said.

Apple lost the two other suits on appeal after a higher court ruled that the Web site operators were journalists and entitled to First Amendment protections. The court forced Apple to pay $700,000 in legal fees to the sites.

But that’s not how Nick Ciarelli, the Harvard senior who founded the blog when he was 13, sees it.

“I see this lawsuit as something that should be encouraging for online journalists who are asserting their first amendment rights, even when their reporting draws the ire of large corporations,” he told me from his cellphone while waiting at Logan Airport for a flight home to his family in upstate New York.
