So this is one of the weirder tech stories of the day.

As of today, Think Secret, one of the most popular Apple rumor sites, is ceasing operations as a result of a lawsuit (and subsequent settlement) with Apple. A terse press release says only this:

“Apple and Think Secret have settled their lawsuit, reaching an agreement that results in a positive solution for both sides. As part of the confidential settlement, no sources were revealed and Think Secret will no longer be published. Nick Ciarelli, Think Secret’s publisher, said, ‘I’m pleased to have reached this amicable settlement, and will now be able to move forward with my college studies and broader journalistic pursuits.’”

Think Secret was in the business of leaking information about coming Apple products. Apple was peeved. So Apple sued Think Secret’s publisher, Nick Ciarelli, a Harvard student who wrote under the name Nick dePlume, to make him reveal his sources. He refused, setting off a huge online debate pitting “truth wants to be free” against “you’re damaging a company.”

The lawsuit may have been settled in “a positive solution for both sides.” But the positive for Apple is that Think Secret goes away; the positive for Nick is, presumably, a big sum of money.
