米Microsoftは今週、仮想化というホットな分野でVMwareなどに対抗するための詳細な計画を明らかにする。同社の計画には、シリコンバレーの新興企業Calista Technologiesの買収も含まれる。買収の条件は公表されていない。またライセンス方針を一部緩和して、仮想化ソフトを使えるWindows Vistaのバージョンを拡大し、関連する料金を引き下げる。

ところで仮想化って何だったっけ？

仮想化は、ソフトウェア業界で最も話題となっている技術の1つ。話題になる理由は、OSのように1つのソフトウェアと1台のマシンを対応させるという従来のビジネスモデルを崩壊させてしまうからだ。仮想化技術により企業は、既存の設備を効率的に稼働することでハードウェアコストを節約できる。

Windows VistaのHome BasicやHome Premiumユーザに朗報、とくに企業ユーザは優遇される

具体的には、Windows VistaのHome BasicおよびHome Premiumエディションを仮想環境で動かせるようにライセンスを変更するとともに、企業ユーザー向けのライセンス料金を改訂している。

仮想化とは、コンピュータ上で稼働するソフトを、基盤となるハードウェアから分離し、より柔軟な方法で運用できるようにするための技術だ。この技術を使えば、1台のコンピュータ上で複数のOSを稼働させたり、アプリケーションの作業負荷を別のコンピュータに移動させてハードウェアの利用状況を改善したりすることができる。

また、Microsoft Software Assuranceメンテナンス・プログラムに加入している企業ユーザーであれば、デスクトップ・マシン1台当たり23ドルでMicrosoftのデスクトップ仮想化ソフトを1年間利用することができる。

ライセンス緩和というけれど、それまで規制していた理由はセキュリティ知識が必要だから？

Until today, Microsoft’s end-user license agreement stipulated that users could run only the Business and Ultimate versions of Vista in virtual machines from Microsoft and other vendors. Microsoft attributed the original Vista virtualization restrictions to potential security risks, claiming that “security researchers have shown hardware virtualization technology to be exploitable by malware” and claimed Vista required an advanced level of know-how to thwart such virtualization exploits.

The news is especially welcome for Mac users who want to run the latest Windows version without having to pay an arm and a leg. Until now, Mac users and others wanting to run Vista virtually have had to fork over for the most expensive Business and Ultimate versions.

これからOSは1台に1つ入れるよりもサーバにまとめて使うほうがコストが安くなる

The Redmond, Washington-based company also cut in half the price of a Windows Vista operating system that runs individual PCs from a single server computer. Vista Enterprise Centralized Desktop, introduced in April, will now cost $23 a user per year.

That should go a long way toward helping Microsoft catch up, says Larry Orecklin, a general manager in Microsoft's server software group. "For all the noise around virtualization, the opportunity is still ahead of us," Orecklin says.

"Obviously, Microsoft is coming into this market in a big way," says Bogomil Balkansky, VMware's senior director of product marketing. "Microsoft is a formidable competitor. But we are coming at this from a great position of strength."
