米Cisco Systemsは米国時間2008年3月4日，サービス・プロバイダと企業向けアグリゲーション・サービス・ルーター「Cisco Aggregation Services Routers（ASR）1000 Series」を発表した。

Cisco が2億5000万ドルを投じたこの新プラットフォームは、ファイヤーウォール、SBC (VoIP サービスの境界制御)、VPN など中核的なネットワーキング機能を集約したプラットフォームだ。
Cisco のネットワークシステム担当ディレクタ Ben Goldman 氏は、取材に対し次のように語った。「これは新しいカテゴリのルータであり、企業のネットワークにおける WAN エッジやインターネットゲートウェイといった領域に対する考え方を完全に変えてしまうものだ」

Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday unveiled a new router that helps phone companies and large businesses handle growing Internet traffic faster, and said it won a deal to supply Japanese phone provider NTT Corp's (9432.T: Quote, Profile, Research) next-generation network.
NTT is set to use the ASR 1000 to build out its new Web-based video, or IPTV (Internet protocol television) service, Cisco said, adding that Wachovia Bank was also buying the new product.

Another key to the routers' smooth software upgrades is a new version of its Internetworking Operating System software, called IOS XE. It's the same as the IOS that runs on existing Cisco routers, such as the 7200 series, but it runs on a Linux kernel. As a result, when a new version of the software is installed, the previous version can keep running simultaneously in standby mode.

Despite the estimated cost savings, IDC's Griliches is optimistic about the router but warns that its performance is still untested. "We have no complete assurances from Cisco that it's going to work as they claim, and it's going to require some testing," she says. "But the likelihood of this being better than anything out there is very good."
