スティーヴ・バルマーは先月、マイクロソフト首席経営執行役員を辞任したが、先日のインタヴューで、いつまでマイクロソフト取締役にとどまるかは未定だと話した。

Steve Ballmer, who stepped down last month as Microsoft’s CEO, says in a new interview he’s not sure how long he’ll stay as a Microsoft director.

“It really as much as anything depends on how I see rest of my life playing out,” Ballmer said in an interview last week, to discuss how he sought to avoid being seen as a lame duck in his last six months on the job.

Ballmer’s decision to hold on to his Microsoft board seat after he stepping down as CEO after 14 years was controversial among some potential successors and company analysts.

He is the company’s second-biggest individual shareholder behind co-founder Bill Gates, with about 4% of Microsoft’s stock valued at more than $13 billion. His stake, and his history with the company, make him an important player at Microsoft no matter his formal role with the company. Still, leaving the board any time soon would be a surprising change for a man who has called Microsoft his “child.”

Ballmer, who turns 58 on Monday, said in the interview he is relishing his first break after more than 33 years at Microsoft. “I have a chance to really think” about what to do next, Ballmer said.

That jibes with his first post-CEO public appearance earlier this month at Britain’s Oxford University, where Ballmer said he wasn’t the type to chill out and play golf. “I get to find some new set of things to be passionate about,” he said at the event. “I’m going to take some time and really figure it out.”

In the interview, Ballmer also said it felt “different” to be just a director, and not CEO, when Microsoft’s board met Mar. 10 and 11. He said he was quieter in the boardroom than previously.

“I didn’t talk like I did when I was CEO,’’ Ballmer added. Speaking of his successor Satya Nadella, Mr. Ballmer said, “Satya is doing a great job.’’
