マーク・ピンカスがジンガの経営執行職から退任、「舵取りは一人であったほうが船は安全」

マーク・ピンカスはジンガの経営執行にかんするすべての役職からこのたび退任する。ジンガは彼が２００７年に創業したソーシャル・ゲーミング企業である。この異動により、彼はサンフランシスコを本拠とする同社の代表権をもたない会長となる。チーフ・プロダクト・オフィサーの肩書も返上し、直属の部下を持たなくなる。
この異動について今日行われたインタヴューで、ピンカスはＣＥＯダン・マトリックは話し合いをもち、昨年ピンカスが経営のトップから退任してから１０か月経ち、人事異動の必要で合意したと述べた。
「プロダクトの役割はしばらく続けたかったのですが、これはプロダクトに手を加えること、今後も会社がソーシャルの使命を追求することに裏書きを加えることの両方を望んだためです」とピンカスは語った。「ダンと、既存のチームと、新しい人たちは、それぞれにしっかりと使命を追求しており、舵取りは一人であったほうが船は安全だということです」
声明でマトリックはピンカスについて「ジンガをエンターテインメントのリーダーへと育て上げ、ファームヴィル、ワーズ・ウィズ・フレンズ、ジンガ・ポーカーといったブランドを家族に馴染む名前へと変え、数億人の日常習慣へと引き上げた」と述べた。
さらに彼はこう続ける。「さらなる前進にあたり、マークを取締役会長に据え、われわれはこれからも親密なパートナーかつ共同作業者として拡大を続ける産業のリーダーとしての地位を一層堅実なものとし、競合他社に引けをとらぬナンバー１のゲームをお届けしていきます」
これとは別の声明でリード・ホフマンは、ジンガの取締役会を先日退任したばかりのアントレプレナーで初期からの出資者だが、懐古的に述べている。
「マークはつねにジンガの将来に素晴らしいヴィジョンをもってきました」とホフマンは述べる。「彼はソーシャル・ゲームの可能性を誰より早くから理解し、ポーカーからファームヴィルにいたるゲームは多くの人のソーシャル・ライフを作り上げてきました」
ピンカスの任期中同社はほんの小さな企業から成長し、２０１２年３月には１００億ドル以上の時価総額となった。だが６か月後には２０億ドル以下まで落ち込みんだ。現在同社は３８億ドル程度に位置している。

Mark Pincus is stepping down from all operational duties at Zynga,the social gaming company that he founded in 2007. As part of the change,he will shift to non-executive chairman of the San Francisco-based company,give up his title as chief product officer and will no longer have employees under his purview.

In an interview earlier today about the move,Pincussaid that he and CEO Don Mattrick talked about the need for a change following 10 months of transition after Pincus stepped down from the top job there last year.

“I had wanted to stay on doing the product role for a while, because I wanted to put my hands on the product and make sure the company continued to also pursue its social mission,” said Pincus. “Don and some of the existing team and new people reallyembraced that and,so,ultimately a ship is better with one captain putting a hand on the wheel.”

In a statement, Mattrick noted that Pincus had “built Zynga into an entertainment leader,turning brands like FarmVille,WordsWith Friendsand ZyngaPoker into household names and daily habitsfor hundreds of millions of consumers.”

He added: “Going forward,with Mark in his role as chairman of the board,we will continue to be close partnersand work together to achieve our winning aspiration to be the at-scale industry leader by delivering more No. 1 games in more categoriesthan any other competitor.”

In another statement,entrepreneur Reid Hoffman,who just left the Zynga board and was one of its earliest investors, was also a little bit elegiac.

“Mark has always had amazing vision for building Zynga,” said Hoffman. “He understood social gamesat scale before anyone else — how gamesfrom Poker to FarmVille have become a part of people’s social lives.”
Pincus’stenure saw the company rise from obscurity to a market cap of more than $10 billion in March 2012,only to slide below $2 billion about six months later.Today its stands at $3.8 billion.

Pincus said that he still planson being present at the company just one daya week at most now,although he will have no management duties. Instead, he will initially spend his time doing personal investing —he has been an active angel investor in the past. Pincus noted that he was not likely to start another company anytime soon, although he has considered creating an incubator.
