元タンブラーのプレジデント、ジョン・マロニーはサーカのプレジデントに就任

ＣＥＯを支え、デジタル企業の成長を見送った人が次に取る選択肢は？
２年ほど休み、それからもう一度やってみる。
それが、ジョン・マロニーのしていることだ。ウェブのヴェテランである彼は４年間、タンブラーの日常業務を運営し創業者デーヴィッド・カープを支えてきた。このたび彼は新たな仕事に取りかかる。こんどはモバイル・ニューズ・サーヴィス「サーカ」の日常業務の運営により、創業者マット・ガリガンを支える。
マロニーの新しい職への信条は前職のそれと同じだ。すなわち、会社を成長させる手段をつくること、資金を調達し、ゆくゆくは利益を生み出し、ＣＥＯのプロダクトへの集中を助けること。
そこには別のつながりがある。マロニーはサーカの初期からの出資者だった。そして彼はカープからこの会社を紹介された。カープは同社への最初の出資者だ。
相違点は幾つもある。タンブラーは創業した当初、さほどの競合はいなかった。なぜなら、誰でもカンタンにできるブログ・プラットフォームに需要があると思う人がいなかったからだ。
それに対し、サーカのようなサーヴィスにカネを注ぎ込もうとする人は多い。同社は要約を担う編集室があり、スタッフが事実チェックや大ニュースへの注釈も行なう。モバイル端末に特化したデザインをとる。
ニュー・ヨーク・タイムズには実際、重要記事を選定して提供することを狙ったニューズアプリがあり、ヤフーにもそれはある。今年初頭にジェーソン・カラカニスはインサイドを開設、このモバイル・アプリは手軽に読める、編集者の手を加えた記事を強みとする。
サーカが大量に氾濫するニューズ・サイトのなかで競争していけるのか、考えるのはもっともなことだ。コンシューマが「モバイル・ニューズ・アプリ」を自分に関係あるカテゴリとみなすか、疑問だからだ。(続きを読む)

Maloney’s brief at his new job sounds similar to hislast one: Figure out how to grow the company,raise moneyand eventually generate money as well,so the CEO can focus on product.

There are other links aswell: Maloney was an early investor in Circa,after being introduced to the company by Karp,its first investor.

There are plentyof differences,too. Tumblr didn’t really have much competition when it started up,because no one thought that there was much need for an easy-to-use blog platform.

But lots of people are putting money into services that sound something like Circa,which has a staff of editors summarizing,fact-checking and explaining big news stories,in a format designed specifically for mobile devices.

The New York Times,for instance,has a new newsapp that’s supposed to deliver the day’smost essential stories. Yahoo has one,too.And earlier this year Jason Calacanis launched Inside,a mobile app dedicated to bite-sized news stories, curated by humans.

It’s reasonable to think that Circa is really competing with a much larger universe of news sites, since I’m not sure that consumers think of “mobile news app” as its own category.
