フェースブックによれば、同社のモバイル・ニューズリーダー「ペーパ」アプリのユーザは頻繁に利用しているという。そのユーザ数については謎に留まっている。
ソーシャル・ネットワークである同社は金曜日、このアプリ(１月に開設、同社クリエーティヴ・ラブズ・チームが手掛けた最初のプロダクト)を利用する平均的な人は１日に８０本の記事を読んでいると発表した。だが、フェースブックこのアプリをダウンロードした人の数は一切示唆しなかった。ペーパはフェースブック旧来の機能を多数搭載しており、ニューズフィード、メッセージングもできるが、ニューズ収集機能を持つ。アプリはフェースブックで共有された記事をニューズ、ビジネス、スポーツなど個別の分類に割り振る。
ペーパは現在アイフォーン向けのみで、１月に鳴り物入りで開設されたが、ｉＯＳアプリランキングから間もなく脱落した。アップルのアップ・ストアのランキングを集計するアップアニーによれば、ペーパは３月に１００位から脱落してから人気が下落を続けている。先週の順位は１,４８０位と過去最低を更新した。
フェースブックが発表した最新の調査結果では、アプリを利用する人は頻繁に利用していることが示されている。
フェースブックは、来年には新しいアプリを多数開始する計画だと表明。これらのアプリはフェースブックのモバイル・アプリやデスクトップ・プラットフォームに搭載済みの機能をスピンオフしたものとなる。
フェースブックはまた、金曜日にペーパのアップデートを開始、新機能「カヴァーズ」により、出版媒体による記事を発見しやすくなるという。フェースブックはその具体例として、フォックス・ニューズ・インタラクティブとブルームバーグ・ニューズを挙げ、ペーパで読むことができると紹介している。(続きを読む)

Facebook says that users of its mobile newsreader app “Paper” are using it a lot. How many users there are remains a mystery.

The social network on Friday said the average person who uses the app, which launched in January as the first product developed by its Creative Labs team, looks at a whopping 80 stories a day. But Facebook has given no indication of how many people have downloaded the app.

Paper includes many of Facebook’s traditional features, like News Feed and messaging, but also acts as an aggregator. The app grabs articles that people have shared on Facebook and divides them into separate sections for news, business, sports and others.

Paper, which is available only for the iPhone, launched with much fanfare in January, but quickly fell down in the iOS rankings. According to App Annie, which tracks Apple’s App Store rankings, Paper has steadily dropped in popularity since March, when it was ranked in the top 100. It hit a low of 1,480 last week.

Facebook’s newly-released internal numbers suggest people who do use the app are using it often.

Facebook has said it’s planning on releasing several new apps in the coming year. Some of those apps will be spinoffs of features already on Facebook’s mobile app or its desktop platform.

Facebook also released an update to Paper Friday that included new “covers” for the articles that Facebook said would make it easier to find articles from publications. Facebook cited Fox News and Bloomberg News, among others, as examples of publishers that can be found on Paper.
