モジラのファイアフォックス・スマートフォンが７月にインドで発売

ノイダを本拠とする携帯電話販売会社であるスパイス・リテールは、モジラ社のファイアフォックスで起動するスマートフォンを７月にインドで発売すると発表した。
このニューズが判明したのは今週モジラの上級幹部が、ファイアフォックスのソフトウェアを搭載する２５ドルという安いスマートフォンを今年中にインドとインドネシアで発売すると言明したことがきっかけである。
この「超低コスト」の携帯電話は２種類のSIMに対応し、主に「スマートフォンをはじめて持つ人が手にいれやすい価格帯に特化」するとスパイス・リテールは声明で述べている。
スパイス・リテールは値段については明かしていない。
このファイアフォックス・スマートフォンはインドで、グーグルのアンドロイド・スマートフォンと直接的に競合することになりそうで、同国は中国に次いで世界で２番目に大きな通信マーケットである。
インドで現在販売されている最も安いスマートフォンは６０ドル以上する。
スパイスの携帯電話にはアプリのストア「ファイアフォックス・マーケットプレース」があり、フェースブック、ツイッター、ライン、ピンタレストといったソフトウェア・アプリケーションが提供される。
これとは別の携帯電話メーカーで、ニューデリーを本拠とするインテックス・テクノロジーズ・インディアは、自前のファイアフォックス・スマートフォン「インテックス・クラウド・FX」を８月第１週に発売する。同社によると、このスマートフォンは２０００ルピーあるいは３３ドル未満の値段となるという。(続きを読む)

Noida-based cellphone seller Spice Retail said it plans to launch in India a smartphone that will run on Mozilla’s Firefox software in July.

The news comes a senior executive at Mozilla said earlier this week that smartphones as cheap as $25 powered by Firefox software will be available in India and Indonesia later this year.

The “ultra-low-cost” handset can hold two SIM cards and “will specifically target the affordable segment and first time smartphone buyers,” Spice Retail said in a statement.

Spice Retail declined to comment on the price.

The Firefox smartphone will compete directly with Google’s Android-based smartphones in India, the world’s second largest telecommunications market, after China.

The cheapest smartphone available in India now is priced above $60.

The Spice phones will have an app store – Firefox Marketplace – with software applications for Facebook, Twitter, Line as well as Pinterest.

Another handset maker, Intex Technologies India based in New Delhi, will launch its own version of the Firefox smartphone — Intex Cloud FX — in the first week of August. The smartphone will be priced below 2000 rupees or $33 each, the company said.
